HOW TO CREATE A CALMING ENVIRONMENT QUICKLY AND EASILY

By Nicole Fuge

After a long day—especially when you're juggling work, kids, and everything in between—the last thing you want is for your space to feel just as chaotic. Whether you’re working from home, trying to unwind after a hectic office day, or just need a moment to yourself in between school runs and kid activities, creating a calming atmosphere can work wonders. The best part? You don’t need hours or a huge effort to transform your environment into a peaceful sanctuary. Here are some quick and easy ways to bring some calm to your space (even if you have kids around).

Switch Up the Lighting

Lighting plays a major role in setting the mood of a space. After a chaotic day, harsh, bright lights can feel draining and overstimulating. Instead, opt for soft, warm lighting to instantly change the vibe of your environment.

Dim the lights: If you have dimmer switches, lower the brightness to a gentle level. This can instantly shift the energy from frantic to relaxed.

Use candles: Scented candles can enhance your sense of calm with the added benefit of aromatherapy. Choose calming scents like lavender, chamomile, or sandalwood to promote relaxation.

Try soft, ambient lighting: If candles aren’t your thing, a low-wattage lamp with a soft shade can do wonders. Fairy lights or salt lamps also work well to introduce a soothing glow.

Engage Your Senses with Soothing Scents

Aromatherapy is a powerful tool for relaxation. Certain scents are known to have a calming effect on the nervous system, which can help you shift from stressed to serene in minutes.

Essential oils: Diffuse essential oils like lavender, bergamot, or frankincense in your space. These oils are known for their calming properties and can create a soothing atmosphere without much effort.

Burn incense: If you don’t have a diffuser, incense can work just as effectively. Look for calming blends like sandalwood or jasmine for a tranquil feel.

Scented candles: As mentioned above, lighting a calming candle can both enhance the ambiance and provide a gentle aroma that relaxes your mind and body.

Take Deep Breaths and Add Soft Sound

Your breath and the sounds around you can also contribute to how relaxed you feel in your space. Taking just a few moments to focus on your breathing and introducing calming sounds can help transform your environment.

Practice deep breathing: Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths, inhaling slowly through your nose and exhaling gently through your mouth. Deep breathing can lower your heart rate, reduce stress, and shift your mindset.

Play calming music: Choose soft, instrumental music like classical, ambient, or nature sounds. The right soundtrack can do wonders in making your environment feel peaceful and serene.

Use a white noise machine: If you're in a noisy space or need to block out distractions, a white noise machine can provide a steady, calming sound that promotes relaxation.

Clear the Clutter, Even for a Moment

When your space is cluttered, it’s easy to feel mentally cluttered too. If you’ve had a stressful day, the last thing you need is to be surrounded by mess. Even a few minutes of tidying up can shift the energy in the room.

Declutter quickly: You don’t need to do a full clean-up—just focus on clearing a few key areas. Put away any items on countertops, clear the floor space, and organise a small corner of your room. The visual simplicity of a tidy space can immediately calm your mind.

Create a designated relaxation corner: If you don’t have time to tidy the entire room, just focus on a small corner where you can sit and unwind. Adding a cosy blanket, some cushions, or a calming plant can help create a calming focal point.

Try a Quick, Calming Ritual

Sometimes, a ritual can be the perfect way to reset your energy. Whether it’s something that engages your body, your mind, or both, these simple activities can help you shift your focus from stress to relaxation.

Stretching or yoga: A few gentle stretches or a short yoga session can release built-up tension and help you feel more grounded. Poses like Child’s Pose, Cat-Cow, and Legs Up the Wall are great for unwinding quickly.

Breathing exercises: As mentioned, deep breathing works wonders. Try a simple technique like Box Breathing: inhale for four counts, hold for four counts, exhale for four counts, and hold for four counts again. Repeat for a few minutes to calm your mind and body.

Mindful tea ritual: Brewing a cup of herbal tea, such as chamomile or peppermint, can also be a mindful way to reset. As you brew and sip your tea, focus on the warmth of the cup in your hands and the soothing aroma.

Change Your Physical Space with Minimal Effort

Even minor adjustments in your physical environment can shift the energy and help you feel more relaxed.

Open the windows: Letting fresh air in, even for just a few minutes, can help clear the energy in the room and promote a sense of calm.

Add some greenery: If you have plants, place them where you can see them. Greenery can instantly lift the energy of a space, promote wellbeing, and make you feel more connected to nature.

Unplug from Technology

One of the easiest ways to reset your environment and mind is by stepping away from screens. Technology can often add to stress and anxiety, so disconnecting, even for a short while, can have a powerful impact.

Turn off electronics: Give yourself a break from your phone, computer, or television. The silence or focus on a more mindful activity can help you tune into a calming frequency.

Read a book: Instead of scrolling through social media or emails, immerse yourself in a good book. The act of reading helps shift your focus and creates a peaceful, undisturbed environment.
